Two people were sent to hospital after coming into contact with overhead electrical equipment Thursday morning.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews arrived on Kimberly Avenue, in the 600 block, at 9:22 a.m. They took one person to hospital in critical condition; the other was also taken but considered stable.

No Manitoba Hydro employees were hurt, he added.

Beausejour under boil-water advisory

2:53 PM

The province has issued a precautionary boil-water advisory for Beausejour after a power outage at the local water-treatment plant.

The provincial health and environment departments issued the advisory Thursday. The power outage, caused by electrical work at the plant, led to a “momentary loss of water pressure” in the town’s water system, the provincial notice said.

“Distribution depressurization can compromise the safety of the water supply; therefore, a precautionary boil-water advisory has been issued to ensure public health protection,” provincial officials said.

The province advised all water used for drinking, preparing food and beverages and brushing teeth should be brought to a rolling boil for at least a minute. Water for other household purposes, such as bathing, doesn’t need to be boiled, but officials recommend sponge-bathing small children.

The advisory will remain in effect until the water no longer presents a risk, the officials said.

A new development there is slated to add 57 one-storey bungalows and 13 two-storey townhomes.

The school closed in 1986, after which it was used by the Winnipeg Police Academy and the Winnipeg Police Museum, the Manitoba Historical Society’s website states.

Oliveira candidate for CFL’s top award

10:19 AM

For a second straight season, Brady Oliveira has been voted as the West Division nominee for the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player.

The Bombers running back fell just short last year, losing to East nominee, Toronto Argonauts quarterback Chad Kelly. Oliveira will hope for better luck this time around when he faces off against another Eastern QB, with Hamilton Tiger-Cats pivot Bo Levi Mitchell earning the nod.

Oliveira is also nominated for the league’s Most Outstanding Canadian, which he won in 2023. This year, he’s up against Montreal’s Isaac Adeyemi-Berglund.

Yazidi association leader accused of sexual assault

9:23 AM

A prominent community advocate known for helping Yazidis seek refuge and settle in Winnipeg has been accused of sexual assault.

The Winnipeg Police Service has confirmed Hadji Hesso, who oversees the Yazidi Association of Manitoba, was charged with one count of sexual assault on Oct. 4.

Hesso has made a name for himself as a community leader who has raised awareness about the Kurdish religious minority group being targeted by ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) in their homeland since the genocide against Yazidis began in 2014.

He is currently listed as a member of the Ethnocultural Council of Manitoba’s board of directors.
