Residents evacuate after apartment flood

8:17 PM

Flooding has forced the evacuation of tenants living in a downtown apartment building.
In a post on its website, WRE Development said the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service ordered all tenants of 170 Hargrave St. to vacate their suites after a “significant flooding incident” Monday.
“We haven’t been given a time frame when tenants can return,” WRE said. “We need to assess the damage and have the proper contractors complete the repairs.”
WRE said it was working to have the issue fixed “as quickly as possible,” advising tenants to reach out to their insurance companies for assistance.

City police warn of scam phone calls

10:34 AM

Winnipeg police say they have received numerous reports of people receiving scam phone calls, supposedly made by financial institutions, in the past several weeks.

The Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release Tuesday that the people who received the calls were told their accounts were compromised or that there were unauthorized transactions on their accounts.

“Subsequent interaction between the victim and the suspect, under the guise of securing the victim’s money, ultimately results in money being transferred by the victim and intercepted by the suspect,” the WPS said.

The incoming number will often be made to appear as the actual number associated with the relevant financial institution.

“Members of the public are reminded that their financial institution will never direct them to move funds,” the WPS said.

People who receive the calls are advised to hang up and call the financial institution using the number on the back of their ATM card.

Anyone who falls victim to the scammers can file an online report.
