Stretch of west Winnipeg without power after unplanned outage

6:43 PM

A large swath of homes and businesses in western Winnipeg was without power after an unplanned outage cut electricity for Manitoba Hydro customers Tuesday afternoon.

The issue began around 3:20 p.m. and was impacting roughly 1,300 customers by 6:30 p.m., Hydro spokesperson Peter Chura said.

Crews were sent to the scene to determine what caused the outage and restore power, he said.

The Crown corporation’s online outage map showed the issue was resolved for all but around 30 customers by 7 p.m.

The affected area encompassed a stretch of King Edward Street between Logan and Saskatchewan avenues, and as far east as Keewatin Street between Notre Dame and Selkirk avenues.

It included parts of Red River College Polytechnic’s Notre Dame Campus, according to the map.

Buck Pierce named head coach of B.C. Lions

4:28 PM

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers will be without their offensive guru moving forward, as Buck Pierce has been named the new head coach of the B.C. Lions.

Pierce, who spent the last four seasons as Winnipeg’s offensive co-ordinator, was announced Tuesday afternoon as the new bench boss in B.C. The 43-year-old was considered a frontrunner for the job and is now the 28th head coach in franchise history.

“Buck was a candidate we identified early in this process as someone who is ready to step in and lead our franchise,” Lions general manager Ryan Rigmaiden said in a statement. “His track record in the Canadian Football League as both a player and a coach says it all.”

Pierce returns to B.C., where his CFL journey first started as a quarterback with the Lions between 2005-09, before spending his final season there as well, retiring in 2013. Pierce played for the Bombers for four seasons and then coached in Winnipeg for 10, first as running backs coach (2014-15), then quarterbacks coach (2016-19) and offensive co-ordinator (2021-24).

During his time in Winnipeg, Pierce helped lead the Bombers to a pair of Grey Cup victories (2019, 2021) and five consecutive Western Division championships (2019, 2021-24).

“I’m extremely excited and honoured to take this next step in my coaching career with the organization that originally brought me here nearly 20 years ago,” said Pierce. “The building blocks are in place here and we look forward to getting to work as we strive to bring the Grey Cup back to British Columbia.”

Vacant Young Street house that burned twice to be demolished

12:15 PM

Officials have ordered a vacant house on Young Street that caught fire early Tuesday, which had already been damaged in a prior blaze, to be demolished.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews were called to the house on the 400 block of Young at about 6:30 a.m., where they found flames and smoke coming from the building.

Firefighters used a ladder to attack the blaze from the outside and worked to protect a neighbouring house from the flames. Crews declared the fire under control by 10:30 a.m.

The building was badly damaged and WFPS ordered the building demolished over structural concerns.

WFPS says the roads in the area will remain closed as crews complete their work. Water used to fight the fire has created slippery conditions and city workers plan to apply sand and de-icing materials as needed.

The home previously burned in May 2021. The home was already vacant at that time.
