Mounties arrest three, seize drugs at Winnipeg airport

4:14 PM

Three people are facing charges after Mounties executed a drug bust at Manitoba’s largest airport, intercepting nearly a pound of illicit drugs destined for a remote northern community.

A team of Manitoba RCMP officers arrested the suspects at the Winnipeg Richardson International Airport on July 25 as they were attempting to board a plane to Island Lake, provincial police said in a news release Tuesday.

The bust — which resulted in police seizing 203 grams of cocaine, 148 grams of crack cocaine, 13 grams of methamphetamine, a small amount of fentanyl and cash — was part of an ongoing drug investigation, police said.

“Such a large amount of drugs destined for the small community of Island Lake could have had severe impacts on the people there, both in terms of addictions as well as violent crime that comes hand-in-hand with drugs,” RCMP Cpl. Julie Courchaine said.

Two men, ages 19 and 34, and a 26 year old woman are facing charges related to drug trafficking. The men remain in custody, while the woman was released with a promise to appear in court at a later date.

All of the suspects are from Winnipeg, police said.

The investigation is ongoing.

Motorcyclist seriously hurt in alleged drunk driver hit and run

3:31 PM

A Winnipeg man is suffering from life-threatening injuries after police say he was struck by a drunk driver while riding his motorcycle on a highway northeast of the city.

Officers responded to the collision on Highway 44, approximately one kilometre east of Highway 59, around 12:45 a.m. on Monday. The motorcyclist, a 24-year-old man, was found on the scene suffering from serious injuries and transported to hospital where he remains in critical condition, RCMP said in a news release Tuesday.

Investigators determined the victim was travelling westbound when he was struck from behind by a pickup truck. The suspect fled the scene before police arrived.

The investigation led police to an address on Henderson Highway in Winnipeg, where a 30-year old-man was located asleep behind the wheel of the suspect vehicle, RCMP said.

The suspect was taken into custody and later released. He is scheduled to appear in court in November to face charges related to drunk driving, causing bodily harm and failing to stop at the scene of an accident, police said.

Missing man found dead after possible animal attack on Shamattawa First Nation

A short time later, community members located human remains in a wooded area near a path, believed to be that of the missing person, Manitoba RCMP said in a news release Tuesday.

Man, 30, arrested for pointing firearm

1:49 PM

A Winnipeg man is in police custody after allegedly pointing a firearm at four people in the Dufferin neighbourhood and threatening to kill them.

The incident happened around 6:46 a.m. on Monday in the 100 block of McKenzie Street, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a release Tuesday.

“Officers learned an altercation had occurred when a rock was thrown through a window by one of the victims and the suspect exited the residence with the firearm. It was determined the suspect and the four victims may have previously known each other,” WPS said.

The suspect fled before police arrived, but officers were able to execute a search warrant on the home and seize an improvised firearm and a shotgun shell. At 5:50 p.m., the suspect was arrested at the home without incident, police said.

A 30-year-old man is facing numerous firearms-related charges and charges for failing to comply with conditions of a release order.

One man dead after four-vehicle highway crash

11:43 AM

One man is dead and another is seriously hurt after a multi-vehicle crash on the Perimeter Highway overnight.

Three pickup trucks and a semi-trailer crashed at the intersection of Highway 15 and Highway 101 at about 12:35 a.m. July 30. RCMP investigators said one of the pickup trucks made contact with another truck while the three pickups were travelling westbound on Highway 15.

That contact made the first truck lose control and veer to the right, where it struck the side of a trailer of a semi-trailer stopped at the red light in the southbound lane of the Perimeter Highway,” RCMP stated in a news release. The crash caused the second pickup truck to hit the third one, and both of those pickups went through the intersection.

RCMP said the male driver of the first pickup involved in the collision was pronounced deceased on scene. The driver of the second pickup was transported to Winnipeg hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the third pickup was treated and released on scene. All males were in their 20s. The 69-year-old male semi-driver was not hurt, police said.

Oakbank RCMP are still investigating.
