NDP wins Tory stronghold Tuxedo

9:21 PM

Tuxedo has turned NDP orange.

Wab Kinew’s party snatched the seat from the Tories in Tuesday’s byelection. Carla Compton, a registered nurse, will sit in the legislature, increasing the governing party’s seat count to 35.

Tory candidate lawyer Lawrence Pinsky has conceded.

Third place went to Liberal Jamie Pfau and Green Party candidate Janine Gibson placed fourth.

The seat, which was created in 1979, has been a Progressive Conservative bastion, and was held by two premiers: Gary Filmon and Heather Stefanson. She stepped down as Tory leader after the party was trounced in October 2023 by the NDP. She vacated her seat May 6.
