Cash from proceeds of crime going to Winnipeg police

1:54 PM

The provincial government is giving the Winnipeg Police Service $647,000 from the criminal property forfeiture fund.

“Our government is pleased to provide this funding to support a wide variety of important initiatives, including enhancing officer and victim safety, and providing mental health and trauma-informed training,” Justice Minister Matt Wiebe said in a news release.

Approximately $415,000 is earmarked for buying new equipment to enhance officer safety, including a “protective rescue van” to help protect officers and the public.

“This van will also help protect victims and bystanders in dangerous, high-risk situations,” Wiebe said in the release.

About $100,000 will be used to facilitate mental health and trauma-informed training for WPS members. About $30,000 will go toward WPS engagement on forming an Indigenous advisory council. The remaining funds will be invested in other WPS programs, priorities and equipment.

The forfeiture fund program distributes proceeds from the sale of seized criminal property to organizations across Manitoba.

Street Links staying put, for now

1:11 PM

St. Boniface Street Links will keep its current home for another year but still awaits a permanent space.

Street Links will serve vulnerable people through a $1-per-year lease of the city-owned building at 604 St. Mary’s Rd. until at least Nov. 29, 2025. Council’s property and development committee approved a short-term agreement last week.

Street Links has steadily occupied the site since January after previously using it to provide an emergency warming space. The organization has since placed its headquarters, a safe space and a transitional-bed pilot program in the building.

The city has not committed to a permanent space for the organization. The city’s housing accelerator fund office, which helps administer federal housing dollars earmarked for Winnipeg, would prefer the property be redeveloped to provide affordable housing.
