Arlington Bridge closed indefinitely after structural condition assessment

2:23 PM

The Arlington bridge is closed to traffic indefinitely as of this afternoon.

The results of a bridge condition assessment prompted the City of Winnipeg to immediately close the bridge. The city has been aware of the need to replace the more than 100 year old bridge and the condition assessment shed more light on steel corrosion and structural issues that make annual repairs on the bridge non-feasible, the city stated in a news release.

Ex-U of M law dean’s disciplinary hearings resume

10:30 AM

A regulatory college panel has rejected a former law dean’s latest last-ditch attempt to adjourn a hearing into allegations he embezzled more than half a million dollars from the University of Manitoba during his tenure at Robson Hall.

Last week, citing chronic mental health challenges, Jonathan Black-Branch requested his professional misconduct trial — which was scheduled to resume Tuesday — be dismissed in a vague medical note provided to all parties involved in the proceedings.

The Law Society of Manitoba panel, made up of two lawyers and a public representative, rejected the request early Tuesday.

Black-Branch was charged with an alleged “breach of integrity” in connection to his spending habits while employed at U of M between 2016 and 2020. He has repeatedly attempted to delay his professional disciplinary hearing.

The proceedings are scheduled to take place at the society’s downtown headquarters on Nov. 21, 22 and 23.
