Jets lead Blues 2-1 after two periods

The Winnipeg Jets have taken a 2-1 lead over the St. Louis Blues through two periods at Canada Life Centre.

David Gustafsson and Mason Appleton scored in the middle frame for the home team, but Pavel Buchnevich responded on the power play to bring the visitors within a goal.

Shots are 22-16 for the Jets through 40 minutes.

Jets, Blues tied 0-0 after one period

The Winnipeg Jets and St. Louis Blues are still searching for the first goal of the game after one period of play at Canada Life Centre.

Connor Hellebuyck stopped all six shots he faced in the opening frame, while Jordan Binnington turned aside nine pucks that came his way.

Winnipeg went 0-for-1 on the power play, while St. Louis has yet to get a man advantage.

This is a brief stop at home for the 2-3-0 Jets, who will head to Detroit and Montreal for a pair of road games later this week.

RM of Piney senior still missing

RCMP are continuing to ask for the public’s help in locating a missing woman from the RM of Piney.

Sprague RCMP said on Wednesday it is continuing to ask anyone who has seen Ywanna Backman, 70, to let them know.

RCMP, conducted an extensive ground search in the area around the woman’s property last weekend but didn’t find her.

Backman was last seen on Oct. 13, but she is believed to have made contact with a friend on Oct. 15.

Missing man last seen on Nairn Ave.

Police are looking for a missing 77-year-old Indigenous man who hasn’t been seen since late last week.

Clifford Whitefish of Lac La Croix First Nation was last seen at about 1 a.m. on Oct. 20 after he was dropped off in Winnipeg. He took a taxi and was dropped off on Nairn Avenue but hasn’t been seen since. A few hours later, at 8 a.m. Oct. 20, Oakbank RCMP received a missing persons report.

Police are asking the public for help to locate Whitefish, who has mobility issues. He is described as five feet, six inches tall, 150 pounds, with brown eyes and grey hair. He was wearing a blue jacket and jeans.

Police are asking anyone who’s seen Whitefish or has any information on his whereabouts to call the Oakbank RCMP at 204-444-3847, Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477 or submit a secure tip online at www.manitobacrimestoppers.com.

IIU investigating after woman restrained, hospitalized

Manitoba’s police watchdog is investigating after a woman suffered a medical event while sedated by emergency responders, requiring her to be hospitalized.

Around 9:40 a.m., the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service requested police assistance while treating a woman in the 500 block of Arlington Street, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a release Tuesday.

The woman, who was experiencing medical distress, was acting erratic and combative with first-responders. Another person on scene was armed with broken glass, prompting the call for support, police said.

Police restrained the woman, who continued to fight and spit as WFPS members administered a chemical sedative She then experienced a medical event and was transported to the hospital in critical condition, where she remains in care, the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba said in a separate release.

The IIU is investigating the incident and asking anybody with relevant information or video footage to contact investigators at 1-844-667-6060.

RCMP officer under investigation after document falsified

The province’s police watchdog is investigating after a document connected to an arrest was allegedly signed by someone other than the RCMP officer who carried out the arrest.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba said in a statement it was notified about the incident, which occurred in the RCMP’s  West District last month, on Tuesday.

The IIU said two officers had a warrant to arrest a suspect, but while one officer completed the arrest, executed the warrant, and served the suspect with a court appearance notice, when that officer went back to the detachment to fill out the service document, they discovered it had already been filled out and signed in their name by another officer.

The IIU’s civilian director has decided it is in the public’s interest to investigate.

Feist books Feb. 6 date at the Burt

Award-winning indie-pop star Feist returns to Winnipeg Feb. 6, 2024 for a concert at the Burton Cummings Theatre.

Tickets go on sale Oct. 27 at 10 a.m. at ticketmaster.ca or livenation.com, however there are presales scheduled as early as Oct. 25 at 10 a.m.

Feist, an 11-time Juno Award winner, exploded on the worldwide music scene in 2007 with the single 1234. She released a new album, Multitudes, in April.

Lord of the Dance postponed to June 2024

Michael Flatley’s Lord of the Dance has postponed its Nov. 1 show at the Burton Cummings Theatre to next year.

The new date is June 19, 2024. Previously purchased tickets will be honoured for the new date.

The world-touring Irish dance production is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. It has been seen by over 60 million people.

Tory leader sick, cancels media availability

Manitoba Progressive Conservative Leader Heather Stefanson was forced to cancel a morning media availability owing to illness.

The Opposition leader was scheduled to take reporters’ questions at 11 a.m. on Tuesday for the first time in at least a week. The PC caucus issued a cancellation notice just after 10 a.m.

She was expected to announce her new shadow cabinet after MLAs were sworn in on Monday.

Stefanson was in attendance at yesterday’s ceremony and embraced each MLA after they recited their oath of office.

Missing Thompson girl found

A missing teen from Thompson has been found.

On Sept. 23, Thompson RCMP received a report of a missing 14-year-old female from the community. Vera Lynn Flett had last been seen in Thompson on Sept. 22.

On Oct. 24, RCMP said Flett had been safely located.
