Arthur Day Middle School placed in hold-and-secure while police execute nearby warrant
3:35 PM
A middle school in Transcona was briefly placed in a hold-and-secure Wednesday as Winnipeg police worked nearby.
Winnipeg Police Service spokesman Const. Claude Chancy said officers were executing a search warrant, beginning around 11:30 a.m., in the area of Arthur Day Middle School on Whitehall Boulevard near Wayoata Street. Chancy declined to elaborate on the investigation or where the warrant was executed.
The River East Transcona School Division said in an email to parents that police placed the school in the hold-and-secure, in which all exterior doors were locked.
All students and staff were taken inside, the email said, while staffers remained near the doors to make sure students could get in if they arrived later. Classes continued through the day.
The hold-and-secure was lifted just after 3 p.m.

Another fire in a boarded-up home
12:18 PM
Crews extinguished a fire in a boarded-up home in the North End late Tuesday night.
Firefighters were sent to the two-storey house on the 500 block of Mountain Avenue at 10:59 p.m. They fought the fire from inside and declared it under control at 11:37 p.m.
The structure was boarded up after fire struck the house and a neighbouring home on the night of Feb. 2. Both homes suffered significant smoke, fire and water damage in that fire.
The Tuesday night fire was the second one in Winnipeg this week involving a boarded-up home that had previously caught fire. Crews were sent to a two-storey converted dwelling on the 300 block of Manitoba Avenue late Monday afternoon and declared the fire under control an hour later.
Crews were sent there again early Tuesday after fire was found during a check. The building was boarded up after a fire on the night of March 27. Preliminary observations suggest the first fire was accidental, caused by an electrical malfunction, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said last month.

Jacobs is expected to take his talents to Alberta to join Marc Kennedy, Brett Gallant, and Ben Hebert who parted ways with skip Brendan Bottcher earlier this week.
Carruthers, second Derek Samagalski, and lead Connor Njegovan are contemplating their options moving forward.

Dog rescued after falling through river ice
11:51 AM
Police rescued a dog that broke through the ice in Opaskwayak Cree Nation last week, but the pooch later escaped.
RCMP contacted the Manitoba First Nation Police Service on April 10 after the dog fell into the Saskatchewan River. Police requested other resources, but they were unavailable, the MFNPS said Wednesday.
MFNPS officers spotted the dog roughly 30 metres from shore and could see that the canine was struggling to get out of the water. They found a canoe nearby with help from two female youths.
Police used the canoe to cross the water and rescue the dog. Officers used a thermal heat blanket to warm the dog once it was back on shore. The dog was placed in a police vehicle and returned to the MFNPS detachment so the pooch could dry off and rest.
No one claimed the dog, and it later escaped. The presumed stray has since been returning to the area of the detachment, the MFNPS said.
Morrissey nominated for King Clancy award
11:17 AM
Josh Morrissey is the Winnipeg Jets’ nominee for the 2023-24 King Clancy Memorial Trophy, the NHL announced today.
The defenceman, selected by the Jets organization, joins nominees from each of the other 31 teams in the league. The award is presented annually “to the player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution in his community.”
The winner will be chosen by a selection committee consisting of Commissioner Gary Bettman and, for the first time, former winners of the trophy and the historic NHL Foundation Player Award. The committee will consider the criteria of a nominee’s inspiration, involvement, and impact to positively benefit his community, the NHL said in a statement.
The winner receives a $25,000 donation to benefit a charity or charities of his choice. New this year, the winner will also be eligible to elect that his club receive a grant from the NHL, up to $20,000, to help organize an event related to his humanitarian cause.
