Manitoba police chief believed to be dead after house fire

6:42 PM

Human remains that are believed to belong to Manitoba First Nation Police Service Chief Doug Palson were found after a fire was extinguished in a house in or near Portage la Prairie this morning.

In a news release, Dakota Ojibway Tribal Council Police Commission chair Sherri Thomas said the fire occurred at Palson’s home.

“Portage la Prairie RCMP and fire quickly responded to the scene, and once the fire was extinguished, investigators discovered human remains in the home,” Thomas said. “Although the investigation is ongoing, we believe that Chief Palson was the victim of this tragic incident.”

Thomas said MFNP is working closely with the RCMP and Office of the Fire Commissioner.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Chief Palson’s family as they deal with this tragedy. We are also sharing in the grief and loss which is being felt by the members of the Manitoba First Nations Police Service,” she said.

“We are all connected as a united police family at this time. Chief Palson was a passionate leader who loved our police service and its members who serve our 10 First Nation communities with pride and respect.”

Manitoba RCMP are expected to release additional details about the fire this evening. The news release did not say if the fire occurred in the city of Portage or the surrounding rural municipality.
