Wanted man arrested in Bloodvein shootings

1:31 PM

RCMP have arrested a wanted man accused of firing shots at homes in Bloodvein First Nation more than two weeks ago.

Byron Duck is facing numerous charges after the shootings on Nov. 6 and Nov. 7.

He was also wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for being unlawfully at large (allegedly violating conditions of his release).

The unit, with help from Bloodvein RCMP, arrested Duck at a home on Bloodvein First Nation. He was found to be in possession of ammunition, and a loaded gun was found in the home, RCMP said Wednesday.

Remainder of charges against Steinbach teacher and rugby coach stayed by Crown

12:58 PM

A Steinbach teacher and rugby coach who was accused of inappropriately touching students during sports practices had all charges laid against him stayed by Crown prosecutors this morning.

David Bueti, 43, worked as a teacher and coach at Steinbach Regional Secondary School at the time of the alleged 2022 offences.

Bueti was originally charged with five counts of sexual assault and three counts of sexual interference involving six students between the ages of 15 and 18. Charges involving one of the alleged victims were stayed by the Crown following her testimony at trial. Court records show charges involving two other alleged victims were stayed last month.

This morning, the prosecution told a provincial court judge the Crown was entering stays on the remaining three counts of sex assault and one of sexual interference.

Bueti’s lawyer, Josh Weinstein, told the Free Press his client was cloaked in the presumption of innocence the day he was charged and that presumption should remain.

“I do not know what Mr. Bueti’s next steps will be, but I do know that he is looking forward to spending time with his friends and family who have been very supportive of him over the last 16 months,” Weinstein said.
