Food waste drop-off stations to open across city

12:01 PM

Fifteen food waste drop-off stations will be open across the city later this month.

The City of Winnipeg and Compost Winnipeg are partnering to launch the stations to keep “waste out of the landfill and help reduce the impacts of climate change” on Oct. 15.

Residents can collect food scraps — as well as coffee grounds and filters, teabags, pet food and food-soiled paper products — in any container. The container can be lined with newspaper, a paper bag, or a compostable bag to keep it tidy. Food waste can be stored in a fridge or freezer until it’s ready to be dropped into a designated cart.

The drop-off stations will be located at the city’s three 4R depots and at 12 community centres. The stations will operate until the city’s curbside food waste collection program, expected to launch in 2030, begins.

Fire in Wolseley apartment block

9:34 AM

Some residents of an apartment building on Wolseley Avenue were unable to return to their smoke-damaged suites after a fire Wednesday.

Crews were sent to the four-storey Pamela Apartments at 761 Wolseley Ave. at 8:13 a.m. and declared the fire under control at 8:59 a.m.

Residents exited the building before firefighters arrived. Some residents were able to return to their suites after firefighters finished ventilating the building, but some were not. The City of Winnipeg’s emergency social services team was sent to the scene to help displaced residents find temporary accommodations.

A resident told the Free Press the fire was in an electrical room.

On Tuesday, crews extinguished a fire in a bungalow on the 1000 block of Simpson Avenue. Crews were sent to the home at 1:08 p.m. and declared the fire under control at 1:34 p.m.

Everyone inside got out before firefighters arrived. One person was treated by  paramedics. Preliminary observations suggest the fire was caused by an electrical malfunction. The house sustained significant smoke, fire and water damage.
