METAIRIE, La. (AP) — Veteran running back and former LSU standout Darrell Williams signed with New Orleans and practiced on Tuesday night, two days after Saints rookie running back Kendre Miller left a preseason game with a sprained knee.

Saints coach Dennis Allen said Miller’s injury is not serious enough to prevent him from joining the team on a trip to Los Angeles for joint practices with the Chargers in advance of a preseason game on Sunday night.

“He’ll rehab from there and I think there’s a chance he’ll be available for the game,” Allen said of Miller, a third-round draft choice out of TCU.

The 5-fot-11, 219-pound Williams is a six-year veteran who spent his first four seasons with Kansas City and played for Arizona in 2022. The New Orleans-area native played at LSU from 2014-17.

In 2021, Williams rushed for 568 yards and six touchdowns with the Chiefs.

“He’s had some success in our league,” Allen said. “He had a really good workout the other day, moved around really well. He’s a big, physical runner. We felt like he’d be somebody that would be good to bring into the mix. We’ll see what he can do.”

Coming off a 26-24 victory over Kansas City in their preseason opener, the Saints got Monday off before practicing on Tuesday night. They travel on Wednesday to Los Angeles, where they will remain until after the game on Sunday night.

NOTES: Allen said projected starting guard Cesar Ruiz, a 2020 first-round draft choice, left practice with a shoulder injury, but added, “I don’t expect it to be anything significant.” Allen said Taysom Hill — who plays tight end but also lines up at quarterback for designed QB runs, and also is the upback on punt team — strained an oblique muscle. Allen said that also appears to be a day-to-day injury.
