Music fans are building customized festival lineups using the Instafest app while they wait for the annual Spotify Wrapped campaign to arrive.
Brace yourself, music fans. Spotify’s 2022 Wrapped is coming.
The music streaming giant is expected to rollout its annual end-of-year viral campaign any day now, and users around the world are waiting with a mix of excitement and dread.
Spotify Wrapped provides users with a visually striking overview of their listening activity on the platform over the past year and encourages them to share their results on social media. But since it launched in 2016, the campaign has become more than an amusing distraction — it’s also been embraced as a signifier of one’s taste (or lack of taste), a metaphor for one’s mental well-being and, of course, a meme template.
The campaign is slightly different each year, but typically includes users’ most-listened to artists, songs, genres and podcasts, along with specific data about listening habits.
In 2019, Wrapped debuted a new format modelled after social media “stories,” an idea that was allegedly developed by an intern named who Jewel Ham, who claims that she did not receive credit for the idea. A Spotify spokesperson denied the claim.
Spotify has not announced the date of the Wrapped rollout yet. However, on Monday, Twitter rolled out the official #SpotifyWrapped hashtag, suggesting that it’s arrival is imminent. Still, fans are getting antsy.
(Pro tip: don’t bother trying to fudge your list by binging certain artists or songs — Spotify stopped tracking the data on Oct. 31.)
Meanwhile, Apple Music — one of Spotify’s main competitors — released their Apple Music Replay campaign on Tuesday. Apple Music’s charts are dynamic all year, so listeners can check any time to see how their music is charting.
How to see your Spotify Wrapped 2022
The campaign typically rolls out in late November of early December. Last year, it arrived on Dec. 1. In 2020, it arrived on Nov 27. You can “like” this tweet to be notified when the official launch occurs.
Once the campaign does arrive, users can view their Wrapped list on their Spotify app or their web browser.
On your phone, the list should be available on your home page. If you can’t find it there, you can type “wrapped” into the search bar. (Make sure your app has been updated!)
If you want to view on your web browser, you can visit this site.
Instafest: Spotify users build their personal music festival
Need to scratch that itch before Wrapped arrives? Good news.
Earlier this week, music fans discovered a free app external app called Instafest, which uses Spotify user data to build a customized music festival lineup, complete with a Coachella-esque poster. The easy-to-use app, developed by Anshay Saboo, allows you to create a custom poster based on based on different time intervals. It also gives you a “Basic Score,” which apparently tells you how niche your music taste is.
Best of luck, everyone. And may you embrace your unique tastes.
