‘Survivor’ is back and Chris Rock has a post-slap special: What to stream on Netfix, StackTV and more

With so many different streaming platforms and cable offerings to navigate, choosing what to watch has never been harder. To make things easier, here are our best tune-in tips for the week ahead.

MONDAY

Plan B

If “Survivor” wasn’t premiering this week, my plan A would be “Plan B” for the pick of the week. CBC’s new psychological drama stars Patrick J. Adams (“Suits”) as Philip Grimmer, a man on a mission to save his relationship. How does he do it? By using time travel. The series sees Grimmer enter a twilight zone where, for a price, you can get a “Plan B” to go back in time and fix a mistake before you make it. The series co-stars Canadian Karine Vanasse (“Pan Am” and “Cardinal”) and also features Adams’ wife, Troian Bellisario (“Pretty Little Liars”) in the cast.

The Grizzlie Truth

This documentary explores the mysterious departure of the Vancouver Grizzlies NBA team. The film is led by superfan and director Kathleen Jayme who looks back on the untold story behind the failure of the franchise, which was launched alongside the Toronto Raptors in 1995 before it moved to Memphis in 2001-02.

WEDNESDAY

Survivor

The pick of the week is the premiere of the 44th season of “Survivor.” I have always advocated for the show that drops a group of Americans (and now Canadians!) on an island where they must survive the elements and each other until only one remains, but even I admit the series has suffered from too many twists in recent seasons. The game truly finds its stride when it just lets its contestants compete. That said, the intrigue of watching strangers befriend and then turn on each other is so delicious that it will never cease to satisfy the voyeuristic appetites of fans around the world. With no Canadians to root for last season (after back-to-back wins by Ontario residents), keep an eye out for Moose Jaw’s Kane Fritzler, a 25-year-old law student who now lives in Saskatoon.

The Mandalorian

“Star Wars” fans rejoice because the wait is over. In the first trailer for the third season of “The Mandalorian,” Mando’s return to the planet of his people is teased, seemingly to make amends for taking his helmet off last season and breaking Mandalorian code. Get excited for the return of Bo-Katan Kryze, who believes the Darksaber is her right, which will likely lead to conflict with Din Djarin. The ageless Christopher Lloyd has also been cast in the new season.

Disney Plus

True Lies

Hollywood has recently been criticized for its inability to develop original ideas and this one might take the cake. Inspired (or ripped off) from the 1994 James Cameron film of the same name, this new series follows Harry (played by Steve Howey), a U.S. spy, and his professor wife Helen (Ginger Gonzaga) as they lead extraordinary double lives. After Helen finds out about her husband’s real job, she is also recruited by the Omega agency when they discover that her yoga and Tae Bo skills might be an asset.

FRIDAY

Daisy Jones & the Six

Based on the bestselling book by Taylor Jenkins-Reid, this musical drama series follows the rise and fall of a rock band in 1977. Fronted by Daisy Jones (Riley Keough) and Billy Dunne (Sam Claflin), the band mysteriously splits up after a concert in Chicago. The Prime Video show picks up decades later as band members tell the truth behind their breakup. This show is also in the headlines primarily because of who it stars. Keough is the granddaughter of Elvis Presley and the daughter of the late Lisa Marie Presley.

SATURDAY

Chris Rock: Selective Outrage

Rock’s second comedy special for Netflix streams live on Saturday. The event will be history-making as it features Rock performing standup in real time and also marks the first time the comedian might openly discuss being slapped by Will Smith during last year’s Academy Awards ceremony. At the time, the funnyman refused to press charges, but the incident has since resulted in the former “Fresh Prince of Bel Air” and “King Richard” Oscar winner being banned from the awards ceremony for the next decade.
