A woman is in police custody after a fire at a Furby Street rooming house.

Fire trucks and police surrounded the home at 260 Furby Street around 6:30 p.m. Friday.

The City of Winnipeg deployed a Transit bus so displaced residents could stay warm.

Tenants said the fire was small, but they are unsure when they will be able to return.

One resident said more than two dozen people live in the three-storey home, which has become “a living nightmare” over the last year, with people who were not tenants appearing to live in the hallways.

The man, who asked not to be named, said he has lived in the building for five years.

Police handcuffed a woman at the scene.

Neither the Winnipeg Police Service nor Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service released details about the blaze.
