Waco: American Apocalypse

This three-part docuseries describes itself as the definitive account of the 1993 crisis when cult leader David Koresh squared off in a 51-day faceoff with the federal government. The release of the series has been timed with the 30th anniversary of the incident and features new and never-before-seen footage from the FBI Crisis Negotiation Unit. “Waco: American Apocalypse” follows the scripted miniseries that starred Canadian Taylor Kitsch in 2018 (which has a sequel coming out next month).

The Night Agent

Based on a novel by Matthew Quirk, this new thriller stars Gabriel Basso as Peter Sutherland, an FBI agent who is at the centre of a conspiracy involving a White House mole after he answers a call on an emergency line.

Yellowjackets

The second season of “Yellowjackets” debuts Friday. The series follows an all-girls high school soccer team that manages to survive a plane crash. Perhaps the most compelling part of the show is seeing how the thriving athletes turn savage as they attempt to make it out alive. The show also catches up team members 25 years after the crash to see if past wounds can ever truly heal.

My Kind of Country

After getting into sports with Major League Baseball, Apple TV Plus is ready to rumble in the reality sphere. The streaming service’s new music competition series promises to break down barriers in country music. Talent scouts Jimmie Allen, Mickey Guyton and Orville Peck each pick a team of new artists and give them the chance to show off their skills. The winner “receives a life-changing experiencing from Apple” that apparently includes exposure across the Apple TV Plus and Apple Music platforms.

This musical rom-com follows a couple who discover that the greatest obstacle to their own happiness is themselves. The series stars Mae Whitman and Carlos Valdes and is directed by Thomas Kail, who won a Tony Award for directing “Hamilton.”

Succession

The wait is finally over and the pick of the week is a no-doubter. It’s hard to believe that December 2021 was the last time we saw the Roy family. Back then, the patriarch of Waystar Royco had sold part of his media conglomerate to Swedish tech mogul Lukas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgård). It appears the decision will cause the Roy siblings to think about future business opportunities without their father in the show’s final act. I feel like this is all a red herring as it is this writer’s opinion that a successor has to be named and if he or she isn’t, what was the point of it all?

Rabbit Hole

Kiefer Sutherland is ready for his return to the small screen. In “Rabbit Hole,” the former “24” and “Designated Survivor” star plays John Weir, a private espionage officer who finds himself accused of murder. The result is the protagonist fighting to clear his name while simultaneously attempting to preserve democracy in a world of prevalent misinformation.

Lucky Hank

For those who missed it, Bob Odenkirk’s new series kicked off last week. The first-person story sees the former star of “Better Call Saul” assume the role of William Henry ‘Hank’ Deereaux Jr., the English department chairman at an underfunded college. The show is based on a book by Richard Russo called “Straight Man.” This show almost serves as a nod to other shows we have seen. There’s a little “Mr. D” mixed in with a little “The Newsroom.” The bottom line is no one can perform self-loathing like Odenkirk and he delivers another solid execution.

Bono & The Edge: A Sort of Homecoming, With Dave Letterman

Academy Award-winning filmmaker Morgan Neville follows Dave Letterman on his first visit to Dublin where the former late-night host catches up with U2 in this new rockumentary. The funny man also joins the ageless rockers for a special performance.
